Beautiful DIY fall flower arrangement ideas to make at home

I’m no floral designer by any means (even though I actually considered that profession when I was a teen), but I love playing around with plants, dried flowers as well as fresh flowers. In today’s post, I am showing you my fall flower arrangement ideas that I came up with over the years and that you can easily replicate at home if you are willing to forage outside in addition to buying some at the store.

I mean we can all go outside and cut some branches and stick them into a vase which always has a beautiful simplicity but sometimes you want to step it up a notch for your coffee table, fall dinner table, Thanksgiving table, or maybe even for Halloween.

So if you are looking for creative fall arrangements to add to your home for this fall season, you have come to the right spot. This is a collection of my floral displays and you’ll find plenty of ideas to get your creative juices flowing.

Growing up in Germany “Erntedankfest” was always part of the fall season for me. It is a “Harvest Thanksgiving Celebration” and slightly different from the American Thanksgiving. (read more about this autumn harvest celebration). It has pagan roots but was also celebrated in church and takes place right at the end of summer and the beginning of fall. When I come up with fall floral arrangements, I always think of that harvest celebration rather than the traditional American Fall and Thanksgiving decor. I love the thought of thanking for the harvest and food we were provided by nature at the end of the growing season. Plus the color palette is so much richer and broad.

In case you wonder what to put in a fall flower arrangement, below is an extensive list of my favorites I have used over the years…

Vessels, vases and grid structures to use for your flower arrangements

• baskets
• rattan and wicker vases
• glass vases and vessel
• metal containers such as tin cans, metal trophy style containers, and metal planters
• different flower pots (my favorite are terracotta colored planters)
• milk glass
• pumkin vessels
• water or milk pitchers

I’ve seen others use real pumpkin vases as vessels. But even if you just place a vase into the center of a carved pumpkin which looks cute they just rot too fast. But I’m always on the lookout for a cute faux pumpkin I could carve as a pumpkin vase.

I don’t get too crafty with my vessels and always just use regular clear tape to make a grid on the top. You can also use chicken wire which has a nice tight grid. While a lot of people use floral foam blocks, I do not because I don’t like the extra work they cause when changing the water. All my examples below have the simple tape grid that you see below.

Fall flower arrangement inspired by fuji apples, nuts, and plums

How about an early fall flower arrangement inspired by beautiful fuji apples, nuts, and plums? I love the vibrant colors of pink tones, purple tones, and brown tones that I replicated in this bouquet with roses and other grocery store flowers. I also added some hosta leaves and maple leaf branches.

Floral table runner centerpiece as flower arrangement

I love laying out a floral table runner. Sometimes I use floral foam blocks in this case I did not. I used seeded eucalyptus, small white pumpkins, pomegranates, artichokes, cranberries, and a simple bouquet of light orange roses in the center of the table.

Adding a fall arrangement to your walls

If you don’t have the space to add a floral arrangement to a table or countertop, then going vertical is always a great option. Most people use fall wreaths but why not add a fall swag like I did to my macrame wallhanging.

All I did for this simple fall swag is use some orange and dark red mums, grasses found on my walk, a sunflower and some random leaves. All found for free!

I also made a quick little video how I put it all together. You could also add a simple fall swag like this to a piece of artwork or your mantle.

Boho fall flower arrangements with grasses/flowers, dried seed pods, and feathers

I mention so often how I collect things on my walks all year long. A while back I changed my work out routine completely because it just didn’t make me happy. I hate spending time at the gym LOL. All I do now is walk 3-6 miles a day depending on the time I have available. On those long walks I love collecting things. In the summer it is items on the beach and the rest of the year it is flowers, grasses, feathers, sticks, seeds, nuts, hey even bones for Halloween… If I see something that I like, I’ll bring it home to craft with. It’s so much more fun then being inside a gym.

Anyways, the fact that boho arrangements have been trending for several years now and are still going strong makes me happy because I still get to play with grasses.

Below you can see a dried grass arrangement in a basket that I made for our living room. I love the subdued colors so much. And it also sends me back to my childhood when my mom had dried grass arrangements in our home. Every comes back in style at some point, am I right?

I also made one for our upstairs hallway that has even more warm colors. Let me show it to you styled in my kitchen where it is easier to photograph. The wicker vase I bought at Target a while back is the perfect vessel for it. Sorry it’s not available anymore but this wicker vase is similar and super affordable.
